Just thought I'd share that my children (now 41 & 44) were and now my grandchildren are delighted to play with the cardboard house that I received for Christmas as a child (I'm now 62). It is a printed cardboard house called "My Home build it yourself" made by the Container Corporation of America. It is 42" long, 39" deep & 42" high. It says on the box (original box) "My Home Prefabriated Concora House Assortment No. 314".

I am looking for the number of the original Mullen Tester and the one in 1909.
Cardboard is cool stuff. I do note that US made cardboard is hands above cardboard that I have seen in Europe (mailed in e-bay)

Great article and photos. I work in the corrugated industry so it was of great interest to me, particularly the advertisements from CCA (Container Corporation of America) . FYI CCA was owned my Mobil for many years. Then it was purchased by Jefferson Smurfit which later merged with Stone Container to form Smurfit Stone Container. Many of the plants of the CCA plants are still in production today. Sadly, Smurfit Stone is currently operating in Chapter XI but is expected to survive.

Great article David! A fascinating case for something that we take for granted and seems so mundane.

thank you for reminding me of the hours of fun i had playing with large cardboard boxes as a kid.

now as an adult, i get a kick out of watching little ones shove away new toys to play with the box it came in.

Those old ads are a great find. Who would have thought that people were already concerned about recycling in 1942... But I guess for very different reasons than today.
